What could be better than keeping window blinds out of the landfill to make your own nearly indestructible non-fade plant labels? Whether you are on a budget or not, making these labels or plant tags have been hands-down the BEST labels I have ever used. In this video I show you how you can easily make them, too!

The Personalized Potager

Kitchen Garden Map for a Client.

This is one of my favorite things that I do – creating a personalized kitchen garden map and planting plan based upon a clients needs and desires. For this particular client I had these constraints:

1) foods that would be tended in the summer and autumn,
2) that the garden be installed in two phases,
3) deer are a problem and possibly rabbits,
4) style is rustic formal,
5) to feed an equivalent of four people (because of many guests and extended family visits),
6) be aware of the septic tank,
7) include some berries and fruits,
easy care and not so much weeding,
9) the garden includes a social area and near the grill on the deck,
10) styles of meals are more italian and cuban in nature.

This is a question from Danielle LaPorte. I found Danielle in a search about creativity nearly 2 years ago. Her’s was the first ebook I purchased called the Firestarter Series. The book was full of questions. I am asked lots of questions all the time, especially from my 9 year old son, but not of the nature Danielle asks. Her’s are much more difficult to answer than “Can I have an apple?”

The WonderGarden’s Living Sculpture

GtC2012 Kick-off Weekend Poetry Slam!

This video is just a smidgen of the fun had on Sunday at Garden the City’s Poetry Slam. I am so thankful to Tony Brewer for taking care of so much for this event as I was not feeling all too well, and today, Monday, am recovering from a fever and sore throat.

But it was worth it.

Not so much for the money, although that will help, but for the sharing of poetry amongst the many types of people gathered there in that room. GtC2012 Kick-off Weekend Friday Evening Highlights!

The evening began slowly, picking up pace as time rolled on. Chris then Ziona then Naomi filled the back room of The Crazy Horse with songs of various styles. Thanks to these artists for believing in the Garden the City 2012 project enough to donate their time to help us raise money to pay for plants to create the walking tour in the Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District! Thank you! A big thanks also goes to The Crazy Horse for donating the back room. Thank you! GtC2012 visual journal : WonderLab Edible Sculpture

Yesterday was a looong day with sculpting beginning in the morning with planting and clean-up ending around 8pm. The morning was about 37 degrees fahrenheit when I started. The day became warm by noon and began to cool once the sun moved behind the building. Many people came to help plant the bearded dragon, with it nearly complete by the time we all packed up. The rest of the onions will be planted today, Saturday, by volunteers who come to work in the WonderGarden.

What do you see? An animal? A pile of dirt? A reptile? Close! It's a bearded dragon!

GtC2012 visual journal : WonderLab Edible Sculpture

Now that the Garden the City 2012 project is getting underway in a way that others can see, I thought I would turn the camera inward so that those who are interested can see first hand what it takes to make a project like this happen. GtC2012 was conceived to be a framework that other individuals, organizations, businesses or municipal governments can follow.

The organization of the project has had a number of changes since inception, over a year ago, mostly internal with attempting to determine the structure of management… should it be held within a non-profit business structure or within My Edible Eden? My Edible Eden is a business being operated for public benefit. The business structure that would be most fitting is an L3C, where profit is secondary (or equal to) the mission of the business.

2 Important Things!!!

Today has not been the easiest of days, and a sense of foreboding lingers in my body caused by the strange weather we have had thus far in 2012… it literally makes my head ache (for 3 1/2 days to be exact).

Along with all of this change with the weather has been some surprising change in The Shop. I had a customer have a problem with a download this afternoon that I was not able to trace down and remedy on my own. Although I am fairly adept with technology, I am not a programmer or technologist in any way. I grow and design gardens of all sorts, write and lead food advocacy groups. Being a one person operation, I sent an email to the company that hosts the products and runs the checkout. They’re a small operation, too.

The thing with small businesses is you get the good with the bad. Small businesses mean personal interaction and service and hopefully empathy, but this does not mean that we have someone on staff 24/7.
